Staying Safe In Your Hotel – Some Tips For Your Next Vacation

Posted on

No one wants to think about how safe their hotel room is when they are checking in for a nice relaxing vacation. Most people will think about fire exits and if the room is sanitary and free of bugs, but many don't think about their personal security. Here are some tips that will help keep you safe at the hotel level on your vacation.

Choice of Room

With some hotels, you will get to choose where in the hotel you would like to stay. For most people, they will choose either a water or garden view for example. You should also think about the location within the hotel the room is. It is best to choose a room between the 4th and 6th floors. This is because most thieves will target lower floors for a quick getaway, and firefighters' ladders typically only reach to the 7th floor in the event of a fire. The tallest ladder truck is roughly 100 ft. tall, or about 10 floors, but not all fire departments have trucks with ladders that size.

When You Check into Your Room

Before you settle into the room for the night, take a quick check around to make sure everything is as it should be. You should look around to make sure no one is hiding in a closet or the bathroom, and ensure the entrance door is working properly and has a proper lock. Take a look to make sure your phone works and that you can access an outside line. Know where your room is located on the floor and remember where the fire exits are.

While in Your Room

Always have your room key and a small flashlight within reach, preferably by the bed. This is in case the power goes out, or if there is a fire and you need to leave the room quickly. You will need the key to get back into your room and it's very difficult to walk around a large hotel and especially downstairs when the lights are out.

When you are in your room, keep the door locked at all times and use the deadbolt or chain lock. If you are staying in an older hotel, the doors may not have key locks, so it is a good idea to have a portable door lock to jam the door shut when you are sleeping or taking a shower. Don't open the door to anyone you don't know, including those who say they work for the hotel. Check first with the front desk after getting their name to make sure there really is an employee that was sent to your room for repair work or other reason.
