Tips For Renting A Kayak

Posted on

Kayaking can be so much fun! However, it does require a lot of somewhat expensive equipment, including a kayak, a paddle, and a life preserver. If you don't plan on kayaking every weekend or every month, then you are probably better off simply renting a kayak and the accompanying equipment when you do want to head out on the water. Here are a few tips to help ensure you have a positive kayak rental experience.

Ask whether the kayak has a rudder or not.

Classic kayaks do not have any sort of rudder or turning mechanism. You turn by changing the direction and strength of your paddling. However, there are some recreational kayaks that come with rudders to make turning easier, especially for those who have less paddling experience. There is no right or wrong here; it's all about what you prefer. But you do want to know what you're getting. Most kayak rental companies offer kayaks with and without rudders, but they may have a default they give out unless you specifically request the other.

Check the paddle length.

It can be really uncomfortable and inefficient to paddle with a paddle that is too long or too short for your body and arms. Kayak rental places generally do their best to match renters with the right paddle for their body size. However, they tend to do this by just looking at you and estimating your height, so sometimes they are inaccurate. If your arms are particularly short or long for your stature, they may not recommend the right size, either. So, when you first paddle away in your kayak, pay close attention to the paddle length. Don't go too far from the rental place until you're sure it feels right. If the paddle does not feel right, don't hesitate to paddle back to the rental company and ask for a different one. Otherwise, you will pay for it later in the form of aches and pains.

Take a lesson if they're offered.

If the kayak rental company offers kayak lessons, taking one can be really beneficial. Even if you have been kayaking before, a review of the basics can help sharpen your skills. And if you are brand new to kayaking, this hands-on learning is the best way to ensure you're comfortable and confident on the water.

Renting a kayak is a great way to enjoy time out on a lake or river. Follow the tips above for a good experience.
